Key Apparel and Silhouettes for Men This Fall
This season offers several competing shapes. Prada has proposed an elongated, precise silhouette. COS is bringing narrower tailoring into its autumn collection. Meanwhile, relaxed trousers and generous blousons still offer plenty of room to move. The practical opportunity is to choose a proportion that suits your day, then make the surrounding pieces support it.

Relaxed straight trousers are the easiest place to start
For someone updating an everyday wardrobe, a relaxed straight leg is a sensible first experiment. GQ’s September 2026 trouser guide identified this middle ground as a central direction for fall: room through the leg, with less of the extreme volume associated with enormous trousers.
Look for space through the seat and thigh, followed by a fairly uninterrupted line toward the ankle. A trouser that becomes sharply narrow below the knee will produce a different effect, even if the label calls it relaxed. Product names are less useful than the side view in a fitting room.
Pleats are worth trying if you want more room at the top. When you stand normally, they should generally settle closed; pleats that pull open constantly can indicate that you need more space through the waist or hips. Sit down before deciding. A comfortable waistband while standing tells you surprisingly little about an afternoon at a desk.
For a first outfit, try charcoal pleated trousers, a cream crewneck and a dark brown jacket. Wear the trousers with the shoes you actually use, then assess the hem. A small fold where the fabric meets the shoe looks controlled; several folds can obscure the shape you bought them for. Have the length pinned before assuming the entire cut is wrong.
Short jackets give fuller trousers a clear outline
A blouson is a short jacket with some fullness in the body, often gathered at the hem. Bombers, Harringtons and certain windbreakers all offer versions of this shape. Their value this season lies in the way they define the top of a roomier trouser.
The fall runways supplied more adventurous examples. GQ highlighted Willy Chavarria’s colorful windbreakers and the variation in volume across the season’s sporty jackets. You can borrow the shape in navy cotton, brown leather or olive nylon without adopting the runway’s entire outfit.
Choose a jacket designed to finish near your waistband or upper hip. Buying a smaller size to shorten an ordinary jacket can leave the shoulders, sleeves and chest cramped. Check the fit while zipped, with your hands reaching forward as though holding a steering wheel.
Underneath, keep the layering deliberate. A knit that ends close to the jacket hem creates an easy starting point. A much longer shirt hanging below a short jacket introduces another horizontal line; that can be intentional, but it changes the proportions considerably.
For weekends, try an olive blouson over a grey sweatshirt with dark straight jeans. If the jeans are already generous, a jacket with a lightly gathered hem gives the outfit some definition without requiring anything tight.
Longer coats bring a different kind of structure
Prada’s fall 2026 collection makes a compelling case for length. The house describes its silhouette as elongated and precise, a direction that offers an alternative to the short jacket and full trouser combination.
For everyday use, start by trying coats around knee length, then compare a longer option. Photograph both from the same distance. The useful question is whether the coat hangs cleanly and works with your layers, rather than whether a particular length is supposedly permitted for your height.
Try it over your thickest regular sweater or a blazer if you wear one to work. Button it, sit down and take a long step. Pulling across the upper back or a front that strains when closed will be more irritating in November than impressive in a fitting-room mirror.
A charcoal coat over a navy knit and dark trousers creates a continuous line. Brown boots introduce a quiet change in color. If your commute involves rain, also check the garment’s stated weather protection: a handsome wool coat and a raincoat solve different problems.
Tailoring is becoming more defined
COS’s autumn/winter 2026 menswear collection explicitly introduces narrower tailoring, including a streamlined wool-blend suit and a double-breasted jacket paired with slim trousers. That is a useful retail example of the sharper direction appearing alongside relaxed clothing.
The wearable version leaves room to breathe while giving the jacket a clearer outline. Look for a collar that sits against the neck, lapels that lie flat and a buttoned front that avoids strong pulling lines. A shaped waist can be subtle.
If you already own a generously cut blazer, experiment before replacing it. Wear it with straighter trousers and a finer knit, then compare that with your usual wide trousers and heavy sweatshirt. Changing what sits beneath and below a jacket can make its proportions feel quite different.
For dinner, a navy blazer, chocolate knit polo and charcoal trousers provide enough variation without a patterned shirt or conspicuous accessories. For work, substitute a pale blue shirt. Keep the trouser fit comfortable through the seat even if you prefer the season’s narrower leg.
Texture makes familiar pieces feel more distinctive
Auralee’s fall 2026 collection showed how much fabric can contribute: Vogue’s review described mauve velvet trousers, suede shearling and draped brown and grey wools. Those materials gave familiar garments depth and movement.
A practical translation is to change one surface within an outfit you already like. Replace a smooth sweatshirt with a textured wool crewneck, or swap flat cotton trousers for corduroy. A brown cardigan worn with indigo denim and a plain white T-shirt can look considered without complicated styling.
Check how the fabric behaves as well as how it feels. A soft, draping trouser and a stiff corduroy pair can have similar measurements yet produce very different silhouettes. Walk toward a mirror; the moving view often tells you more than the hanger does.
Knitwear length matters here too. A sweater that finishes around the upper hip makes it easier to see the shape of fuller trousers. If you prefer a longer knit, try it under an open coat, where the outer layer can frame the outfit.
Shirts deserve another look
COS has also included striped shirting and ties in its seasonal styling. It is a reminder that a conventional shirt can feel fresh when its surroundings change.
Try a blue striped shirt tucked into relaxed grey trousers, with a short brown jacket over it. Keep the shirt comfortable across the back, then check how much fabric gathers at the waist. An oversized shirt may need a roomier trouser rise to tuck comfortably; an excessively tight waistband makes the combination fussy.
For a less formal version, leave a shirt open over a fine T-shirt and wear it beneath a coat. Choose a shirt whose hem and collar still look intentional once the outer layer comes off. An outfit needs to work at the restaurant table as well as on the pavement.
Buy the piece that changes the clothes you already own
Before shopping, photograph three regular outfits from head to toe. Look for the same issue recurring: every top covers the hips, every trouser grips the calves, or every jacket struggles over winter layers. That pattern gives you a more useful shopping brief than a list of trends.
If your trousers all feel narrow, start with one relaxed straight pair. If you already own wide trousers but struggle to style them, try a shorter jacket. If your everyday combinations work and your coat is the weak point, concentrate the budget there.
Ask about alterations before buying. Hemming trousers may be straightforward, while reshaping shoulders or substantially shortening a jacket can be a much bigger undertaking. A bargain loses its appeal when the necessary work is extensive.
Finally, take the new piece home and build three complete outfits during the return window, keeping it in returnable condition. Use your own shoes, bag and outerwear. The strongest purchase is the one that makes those existing clothes easier to wear tomorrow morning.
